If you don't know, what I'm referring to are the dam on the Agawam River just outside the eastern edge of our property, which you can reach from the trail by the Archery Range and following the camp's power line out towards Shangri-la in Wareham.
Now, I've always heard these two places referred to as "Stumpy Pond" and the "Agawam Dam", but it turns out that they might have other, official-type names. Found this quite accidentally while playing with Google Earth, but according to the USGS, they are really the "Besse Bog Reservoir" and the "Besse Bog Reservoir Dam". Here's the USGS record for the pond:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=140:3:7433750458875854319::NO::P3_FID:604410
there are links on the right of that page to show the place on a map.
Never heard those names before, myself. I like our names better. _________________ Dennis

Hey Dennis,
I have more "non-offical" name for the area. Everyone in Shangri-la calls it Eagle Stream. I have no idea about the signifigance of the name but that is what we called it growing up.

At the Gathering today, Jeff mentioned that the Besse family owned several bogs upriver a bit, so the name the USGS has makes sense.
"Eagle Stream" sounds like a neighborhood-kid, "I saw a big bird there once" kind of name. Unless it has something to do with the camp being right there, but that seems unlikely.
The river, of course, is the Agawam River (been on maps that way for over 100 years.) _________________ Dennis
