I don't know how many of you have caught the news coverage, but Narragansett Council has had to temporarily close Yawgoog this summer due to an outbreak of the Norwalk virus (the same kind of virus that was causing so many problems on cruise ships a few years back.) There's some pretty good coverage in the Providence Journal at these links:
Stomach flu shuts down Yawgoog until Aug. 7
Norovirus confirmed as Yawgoog illness
and the council has their statement up here.
You can look for other coverage by searching Google news.
Between that and the deaths and illness down at Fort A. P. Hill at the Jamboree, it hasn't been a pleasant week.
To help with the virus situation, Cachalot will be playing host to about 120 Scouts and Scouters that have been displaced from Yawgoog next week (beginning Sunday, July 31). This is in addition to the Eagle Week program already scheduled.
With so many people in Camp that may not have been there before, our illustrious and industrious Vice-Chairman, Tom Whelan, is trying to put together a small cadre of folks to act as guides this coming Sunday. If you're interested and available, please contact Tom directly (you can email him from his forum profile, or at the address listed on the "About" page). I'm not completely certain, but since this is a youth-facing activity, I think you'll need an active BSA registration for this one, unlike our other projects.
Here's to hoping our friends over at Yawgoog get the facility healthy and get back up and running as soon as possible! _________________ Dennis
