Just wanted to wish everyone a happy Turkey Day!
(Mmmmm... turkey.)
For a long time in my Troop, the weekend after Thanksgiving ended up turning into our annual cooking camping trip. Anything went -- sure, we'd do the turkey thing (slow-roasted directly over a fire, or using a clean garbage can as an oven; this was before turkey fryers became all the rage), but we'd also do Thai food, dim sum, lasagna, buffalo wings, chili (there was one particular pot of "afterburner" chili -- intensely hot, but it didn't hit you until you were already on your second or third bite, not on the first one,) and baked goods. Lots of baked goods.
Pumpkin pie. Sweet potato pie. Apple pie. Cobblers. Apple crisps.
And that was just in the first stack of dutch ovens.
Everyone always ate well, and a lot of people went home with more leftovers and food hangovers on Sunday morning. I'm pretty sure we kept a few Rangers well fed for the week after these trips on more than one occasion.
Just one of my favorite camp memories, and it seemed like a good day to share. _________________ Dennis
