OK, so this one is more for the geekier part of our audience, which includes your webmaestro, but it can be quite useful.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it's a way for a web site to provide "headline"-type information in a lightweight way. Most of the time, people use RSS to collect headlines from multiple web sites and combine it in a single place, to make finding and reading the new stuff simpler.
For example, people who have personalized My Yahoo! or Google pages can add headlines using RSS feeds to those pages from any site that supports it. Users of the Firefox and Safari (and, with the upcoming version 7, Internet Explorer) web browsers have built-in support for RSS feeds. There are also standalone RSS applications available. Have a look here for a list of RSS applications.
So, on to the feeds. These are just regular old web addresses to enter into whatever application you end up using. The links are by forum:
Site Announcements and Info:

Don't Know Much About History:

Or, to see the most recent posts in all of the forums, use this one:

I myself would probably just use the last one, unless you never participate in our discussions, in which case just the site announcements one would be a good choice. And if you're not participating in the forums -- why not?
One final caveat: consider this "experimental" support. We haven't figured out how much of our web resources this service will take up. If it becomes a drain (which I don't expect) we may have to turn some or all of it off. If the experiment works, we'll probably work it into the site a little better (make the links available right in the forums somewhere.)
If you find this useful (or if you run into problems), please drop me a line at webmaestro@cachalotalumni.org and let me know! _________________ Your friendly neighborhood site administrator |
