Camp Cachalot Alumni Association To Hold Winter Gathering

The Camp Cachalot Alumni Association is holding its 2016 Winter Gathering on Saturday, February 27th, 2016, from 11:00am through 3:00pm at the Fairhaven Council on Aging, 229 Huttleston Avenue, Fairhaven, Massachusetts. This free event is open to members of the Association and interested members of the public, including those current and former Scouts, Scouters, and family members of those who have been involved in local Boy Scouting at Camp Cachalot in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The program for the day includes an update on goings-on at Camp Cachalot and with the Alumni Association, information on the history of local Scouting, and a lunchtime social. Attendees are encouraged to bring along any of their own Scouting photos or memorabilia to show.

We're also proud to welcome our guest speaker, President of the Narragansett Council BSA, George Shuster. Mr. Shuster will be giving a presentation on the rich local history of whaling. In addition to his role as President of the Narragansett Council, Mr. Shuster is the chairman emeritus of Cranston Print Works Company. When he was in college, he worked as a boating instructor at Camp Hoffman for two summers. He was formerly a partner at Edwards and Angell. He received a BA from Yale College, an MS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a JD from Yale Law School. He is Chairman of Care New England, the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition, the National Textile Association and the Textile Hall of Fame. He is past secretary of the Yale Crew Association, and was previously involved with the RI Audubon Society and the Providence Public Library. He has been recognized nationally for his quilts made using clothing labels.

About the Camp Cachalot Alumni Association

The Camp Cachalot Alumni Association was founded in 2004 by several current and former attendees of Camp Cachalot, with the express purpose of providing support for Camp Cachalot, helping to preserve the traditions and history of Camp Cachalot, and bringing generations of campers together to share their experiences. It is a not-for-profit organization operating under the auspices of the Narragansett Council. Camp Cachalot, whose name is taken from the French and Portuguese term for "sperm whale," opened in the summer of 1946 and has since served the youth of Southeastern Massachusetts, including New Bedford, Fall River, Wareham, Taunton, and points between.

Membership is open to any and all persons who have been affiliated with Camp Cachalot, the former Moby Dick Council, or any predecessor camps or councils. More information about the Association can be found at its Web site: www.cachalotalumni.org.
