Camp Cachalot Alumni Association Announces Homecoming 2010
Honoring First-Ever Camp Cachalot Wall of Fame Inductees
The Camp Cachalot Alumni Association announced today that it will be holding its sixth annual homecoming at Camp Cachalot in Plymouth, MA on July 10, 2010, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Members of the Alumni Association, family and friends of the honorees, as well as all those who have visited or who have been associated with Camp Cachalot since its opening in 1946, are welcome to attend. The afternoon’s activities will begin with lunch at noon, followed by a brief update to our membership on the state of the Association, and then our main event: the first-ever induction ceremony for four individuals and groups being placed on the Camp Cachalot Wall of Fame. The induction ceremony itself will begin at 1:30pm.
Our first-ever honorees for the Wall of Fame, nominated and selected by the membership of the Alumni Association, are long-time area Scouter Albert Hall of New Bedford, being honored for over 40 years of humble service to Camp Cachalot; former Moby Dick Council Scout Executive Sumner H. Morse, formerly of Dartmouth, for his many contributions as a Scouting professional to the success of Camp Cachalot over the years; L. Fred Prefontaine, a Scouter, carpenter, and cabinetmaker from New Bedford whose long service to Camp Cachalot from the late 1950’s until his death in 2001 made Cachalot a better place; and the George W. Magee Memorial Trust Fund, whose generous contributions to Camp Cachalot and other Scout camps throughout Massachusetts have made possible many physical improvements to the camp since its founding.
There is no cost to attend Homecoming, although a small donation of $5 is appreciated if you plan to join us for burgers and hot dogs for lunch. If you know you’ll be having lunch, an RSVP via e-mail is appreciated. More information is available at the Camp Cachalot Alumni Association’s Web site at www.cachalotalumni.org or by sending an e-mail to homecoming2010@cachalotalumni.org.
About the Camp Cachalot Alumni Association
The Camp Cachalot Alumni Association was founded in 2004 by several current and former attendees of Camp Cachalot, with the express purpose of providing support for Camp Cachalot, helping to preserve the traditions and history of Camp Cachalot, and bringing generations of campers together to share their experiences. It is a not-for-profit organization operating under the auspices of the Narragansett Council. Camp Cachalot, whose name is taken from the French and Portuguese term for “sperm whale,” opened in the summer of 1946 and has since served the youth of Southeastern Massachusetts, including New Bedford, Fall River, Wareham, Taunton, and points between.
Membership is open to any and all persons who have been affiliated with Camp Cachalot, the former Moby Dick Council, or any predecessor camps or councils. More information about the Association can be found at its Web site: www.cachalotalumni.org.
