Homecoming 2021 and Diamond Jubilee Celebration Updates

We're less than three weeks away from our Diamond Jubilee Homecoming Celebration out at Cachalot, taking place on Saturday, September 18th, 2021, and we really hope you'll be able to join us to celebrate 75 years of Camp Cachalot!

You can find all the details on the event's page on our web site, including a link to preregister. Knowing who is planning to attend in advance will help us plan for lunch.

It's been a whirlwind month, with sad news about the future of Cachalot as a Scout camp, but we still intend for this Homecoming to be a celebration, both of 75 years of memories, songs, and other Cachalot traditions, and to recognize our 2020 and 2021 Honorees for the Camp Cachalot Wall of Fame, Marcel Hudon and Dennis Wilkinson. We are working to arrange for a final Association event at Cachalot when we know more about when the sale will occur (which will not be for several months, and may not occur until 2022), so let's spend this day enjoying camp and celebrating with our friends. We'll save "closing ceremonies" for a later date.

We also have a quick update on our Diamond Jubilee merchandise. We've set a price for our commemorative photo book 75 Years of Cachalot: From the Archives of the Camp Cachalot Alumni Association. Copies will be available beginning at Homecoming for $50 each. Our archivist (who put the whole thing together) will be available to sign copies if you would like yours signed.

We will also have the 75th anniversary patches announced in the last issue available, as well as other Association items including silkscreened T-shirts, decals, and photo prints. Unfortunately, we have been informed that supply chain issues have delayed the embroidered polo shirts and hats for our preorder, so those will not be available on the day of the event. We'll communicate with those of you who preordered to arrange alternate delivery, either at a future event or via shipping.

Memories of Cachalot: Dennis Greene

Cachalot camper and 1959 staff member Dennis Greene is the focus of the next installment of out Memories of Cachalot video interview series. Mr. Greene is an Eagle Scout formerly with Troop 8 at Tifereth Israel synagogue in New Bedford, and attended Cachalot for the entire 1955 and 1956 seasons, one of only a handful of Scouts to have done so. After spending 1957 and 1958 at the National Jamboree and at Philmont, he returned in 1959 as a member of the Pioneering staff for the summer.

In this interview, he shares some of his memories of camp both as a camper and a staffer, including events at camp and the Troops and staffers who influenced him.

There might even be another camp song in it for you…
