Over the last few weekends, our Wall of Fame committee, led by the intrepid Duane Houghton, with help by several other alums, volunteers from Troops 55 and 70, and our equally-intrepid Ranger Karrie, have started the process of making the Camp Cachalot Wall of Fame a reality. The Bill Joyce Memorial Field is being reshaped in preparation for the installation of the Wall, with old, decrepit shrubbery going away and some new hardscape in the form of curved retaining walls being installed.
Duane’s been taking pictures of the progress and sharing them over in our Facebook group, and I’ve shared them here as well, for those of you who don’t do the social network thing.
While doing the initial excavation, the crew found a 12”x12”, chamfered-edge post in the ground:
We suspect this is the base of the old flagpole that was on this site, prior to it being redone in the late 1980s to be dedicated to Bill Joyce. We don’t have any great shots of the site from this time period, just some aerial shots from 1983 provided by Conrad Rousseau. Here’s a shot with the flagpole visible and circled in blue:
If you have any pictures of the flag field pre-1987 or so that you’re willing to share, we’d love to have them!
Duane will be out on site again this Saturday, November 26th, and he’s hoping that any alumni who can will pop out to Cachalot and lend a hand. Most of what’s happening on site right now is grunt work: moving earth and stone, setting sonotubes for footings, and so on, so come prepared. Shovels and rakes would be helpful, too.
Much of the cost for construction of the Wall of Fame has been supplied by a generous donor (I’m not sure how or if they want to be credited, so they’ll remain anonymous for now), but we’re still several hundred dollars short of our needs to finish the wall, install the names of our existing honorees, and finish the living portions of the landscaping. Any help in that area is also greatly appreciated, and is tax-deductible. You can visit our Wall of Fame donation page to donate via credit card online.
Last, but certainly not least, nominations are open for next year’s honorees. More detail is coming soon in the fall Cachaletter, but you can always grab a nomination form and get started! _________________ Dennis
